Mr Masahiro Ogasawara

2nd street, Kyobashi, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. Office buildings is starred with gallery. "Gallery Allies" is located on the second floor of the building in the amusement square of Ginza.
The owner, Mr. Ogasawara had kindness to lend a gallery without charge for children of Medaka School last summer. After that, he introduced the young and energetic artists who had held an exhibition of their works at " Gallery Allies" for us, and he found a great opportunity of the program to leave a work of art that was produced in front of, or with children in the class entitled " Art-Performance" per a month.
Mr. Takayuki Seki who produced " No-No Chan", the symbol mark of pediatrics, also held a private exhibitation.

Mr. Ogasawara who was born in Shiba in Minato Ward is a native Tokyoite, and he has never gone away from the neighborhood of Ginza. In his childhood, under the influence of victory for America in the second world war, he said the bustling during the Christmas season in the neighborhood of Ginza was more splendid beyond comparison.
" My family operated a sushi shop from my grandfathers' generation. I was oldest son, and I had three younger brothers. In the fifth grade of elementary school, my one brother died, so I have two brothers. From childhood, it was natural that I helped my parents when sushi shop was flourishing. It was common that I worked, because my parents also didn't take a rest from Bon and New Year's Day, and that habit is hard to get rid of even now. I think postwar rehabilitation is quickly reconstructed, because there were many such persons."
From when does Mr. Ogasawara who grew up as a child of sushi shop have his eye's opened to the world of pictures?
" In my childhood, I always drew a picture, because there was no space to play outdoors. Shiba Park or Hama Imperial villa were about all space we could feel of nature, and it was for the reason that there was not a feild in the neighborhood. From about my earliest recollection, I liked to draw a picture. What one likes, what one becomes skillful naturally. I was always first. Although I think people should not mark the pictures, men who like to draw a picture become skillful and all such men may have good marks. I had no idea that I made my way to art in the future, I made a point of drawing a picture in a different way from others. I was conscious both what I grasped front ways and what I took a side view of. Usually, when people made a sketch of nature or still life, they drew as they saw it. But, I did not draw in a same way. As I grew up, I was worried about whether I became to be artist or not, up to the age of thirty. Actually, though I held a one-man show more than ten times, I gave up. My pictures had a poor sale and I had to succeed to the family business as an oldest son fatally. So, it was impossible for me to run away from home alone. "
After his father's death, he came to succeed to the family business. Then, he was already turned thirty.
" I started gallarey from thirty years of age upward. In Japan, the reason why little worldwide artists appear is that there is not an enviroment that young artists can be come forward in succession. Although the persons who buy the pictures also have the purpose in making money from their investment in the future, there is a little different from that they like the pictures and buy. If some mighty picture dealers say " This work of art is good " , Japanese can not deny to buy that. We tend to gulp down what an art critic says. But that is a mistake. I want person who is on the side of seeing to say, " Although someone states that picture to be good, I like this one. " I thought I wanted to bring up the coming young artists than the older artists who were steeped in critique.
For certain, Gallery Allies deal with the work of young artist who has a young and fresh sensibility. In Art Performance up to this time, oil painters and engravers condescend to leave the brilliant works in the pediatric ward.
" If I deal with only popular artists, I can make a profit. But, if I think " art is to create ", or " artist must give an emotion to people ", the purpose of gallery differs from ' selling'. I have the only consciousness that I want to pick up good artists. Because I want to pick up persons who express something wonderful for me, I don't feel like picking up popular artists. I have affection toward to the pictures. I can't live on such a way of thinking. If the gallery deals with young artists takes rental fee as the gallery for rent, the gallery can't be managed. Artists also have to make a living by a part- time job, and be burdened with the risk. I hope good artists are brought up while burdenning with the risk.
We are given advaice from Mr. Ogasawara.
" To behold the pictures differs from to do the photograph, doesn't it?What I want to say for the generality of people is to want to appreciate various pictures at any rate if you can't understand. If you do so, you become to like a picture. In time, you will get to realize what it is good and what it ia bad. In what manner one feels is most important. Good work of art have impact on us and stimilate our mood.
The persons who say " a picture is difficult " tries to read artist's intention. They try to translate impression into the word, " what is this? " As for music, we can feel likes or dislikes immediately, but with regard to picture, there are some people who say what they feel after keeping apicture in their mind once. Really, both vision and audition are same. Picture is by no means difficult. "
How does Mr. Ogasawara think about " talent " as matter of fact?
" I feel that there is no person whom skill improves after growing up roundly except Picasso as yet, even if he draw very well in his childhood. After all, if a person rearrange what he wants to draw and starts to draw a picture with self-consciousness, evreyone can draw a picture. However, to draw a picture is not simple thing. To draw well differs from to draw a picture that produces an impression on people. If there were no these, vitality is expressed in the picture, spirit, and neat concept, artists can not move people. And, famous artisrs have rather attraction than drawing well, that is, imagination, modernistic power, something to continue from the present age to the future. I suppose if artists have something peculiar and they can produce an impression on people, themselves have ' peculiarity ', that is called ' talent', isn't it?
Art is to create something different from others, that is originality. At least, it is no use trying to express what somebody previously did. In music, there are classical music and popular music. Smilarly, in picture, there is also something like popular song. But, if artists pursue better quality, it is inevitable that the picture is getting apart from the populace. The better artists try to draw what they want, the better they have different view of things from others. And the pictureis apt to recognize later. The reason why many artists are recognized after their death is that their way of thinking is ahead of the times. If they are not accepted in the same generation, they are accepted in the later generation. However, I think they wish their works to sell during their life. "
At Metropolitan Museum in New York, during school children listen attentively to speech of elderly refined teacher, they sit down on the floor and look up pictures hanging on the wall. If such art education is carried out early in Japan, we may feel art museum more familiar.
" In our country, economy has been took preference and we increase sensitivity to money. Something most delayed is culture, art, and leeway of mind. There has been little person who had leeway of mind as yet. Nevertheless the reason why Japan can be attained to this point is that it is the result of our predecessor's efforts, and we expect the next generation to build up something cultural. Japanease are becoming to be persons who can decide likes and dislikes immediately. That is wonderful.
I hope pictures are hung on the wall everywhere. In America, I heard the major banks concerned themselves with art collection, and spent a large amount of money in collecting the works of modern artists, moreover, these bank got to buy the works from a period of their obscurity.
After all, people who aimed at the top might be busy with study or business, and have no time to introspect at their leisure. But if the time is recognized what it is important comes, we can change. Although there are many artists can make a living by drawing in Europe, there are little in Japan.
What we can shiver with delight when we come across a wonderful work is only art among things a human being has created. "
