Professor Shoichi Awa
Dr. Syouichi Awa is a profesor of Kyourin University. He was an assistant professor of pediatrics of Tokyo university and a head of laboratory of system physiology to March in 1990.
" I was born in the country in Korea and lived up to the age of the first grade. My father was salaried worker in a finance company. But in the second grade, because he changed his occupation, our family moved to Peking. After 3 years, the World War came to an end, we had lived in dugout on the outskirts of Peking for half a year. After that, our family came back to Japan and looked around for the place to live.
In my childhood, I liked music and drawing a picture. I bought 6 colors of oils and painted a picture on wooden boards thrown away. And I was unusually interested in sound. When I was a schoolboy, I listened to my teacher's performance as I hidden at the back of upright piano in the music room. I was taught music by teacher and I also exercised by myself.
In my junior high school days, I gave a performance of easy popular music togather. I had experienced to accompany a song " A lighthouse keeper" on the piano at the chorus contest
Reaching the age that I was worried about many issues, I began to listen to the classical music."
Why did Dr. Awa ,who loved music very sincerely, choose a doctor as his occupation?
"It seemed that my father wanted me to study the law. I thougt it was uncongenial to me , yet I didn't have anything to want to do. But I liked literature, though I was not interested in natural science.
Simply I was very intersted in human being, and I took a great intrest in the existence of a human being itself. At puberty through junior high school into high school, I was vague intrest in a human being, the earth, the universe, philosophy and religion. However, I came home to my heart that I was said I could not live by literature and art, and I might choose the doctor to live as a sound occupation
I was not good at science and maths, but because I was persistent and argumentative, I was very interested in the construction of mathematics and the beauty of its constitution. Now, I make the study of medicine which is related to mathematics, and it passed several years after I became a pediatrician."
As mentioned, Dr. Awa is the first head of laboratory of system physiology . After study abroad to America ,he began to took a great interest in the theory of system physiology, and he organized ' system laboratory ' as soon as he returned from America.
"After belonging to the department of pediatrics, if pediatrician was uncongenial to me, I thought to go to another department. In the clinical lecture of school days, we students were thinking about labo data of patients on the basis of the slides and prints. I selected cardiology as my feild because there was room to think by myself while reading electrocardiogram and I thought it was suited for me.
And I felt a strong affinity with the action that ' listened to the sound' by the stethoscope.
The reason to choose of pediateics was that fractionatio was well advanced in internal medicine, even in the field of cardiology. And I thouht because heart, liver and kidey were organically correlated to each other, I could grasp the human body as a whole.
System physiology is the study that ascertains how each of organs relates to and gives form to the whole image while observing the whole of an individual. In this sence, system physiology might lie on the prolongation of the intrest in a human being maintained from my childhood
Dr. Awa says "I was obstinate and perverse." Now, how does he look at children?
"Until I became a pediatician, I didn't like children particularly. But, now, I really hold children dear, especially, under the age of three.
I think there is a time that a person has great suffliction twice a life. The first is in the age of adolescent, and the second is the time when a person attains old age and faces with fear of death and looks back upon own life. Suffliction in adolescent has possibilities. However, the second one is no room of choice. Looking back now, in that sense, I think fit to choose pediatrician. Observig children, I feel that I look at 'origin'. Essentially, children live exclusively by sensibility."
Dr. Awa says that he still has many thing to hope to do. About the study, he hopes that he leaves the way of thinking to the next generation as a form, about music, he want to leave the recording of the performance of violoncello. And he wants to put a matter that remains in his mind in writing. Dr. Awa may have the making of artist. Dr. Awa who said "I want to conduct an orchestra" is with a broad smile on his face.
Finally I requested his advice for young generation.
" Be free! Have a confidence in your own life!
This is my advice for young people. To create something is to possess a fertile imagination without restraint. I wish you to try to think deeply and gain your experience, not to escape from anythig! Your life isn't twice. If you stand up to unlucky situation, it will become to acquire deep experience. this experience will makes you lucky.
Gain experience and think about it deeply as much as you can. I belive, you may be able to live more 'deeply'. "
